My #VMworld 2017 Recap

#VMworld 2017 Las Vegas is officially over.  As always, it was great to put all the Twitter handles to faces of people that I’ve known for a while!

Unfortunately, I was struck down by the vFlu on Sunday afternoon (which was probably due to ride in the tin germ can to get to Las Vegas).  I wasn’t feeling so great, so I spent most of my time in the VMTN Community blogger area in the VMvillage.  Why I was pretty bummed out I was not up to walking the expo and sitting in on sessions, the blogger area turned out to be a great place to spend the bulk of my week.

My week broke down into the following areas:

Blogs, Blogs, Blogs!

Did I mention how great the blogger lounge was to hang out in?  It had a great view to the big screen in the VMvillage for the keynotes.  Two of the biggest announcements were the general availability of VMware Cloud on AWS, the introduction of VMware AppDefense, and the introduction of Pivotal Container Service or PKS.

On another note, I gave my iPadPro and SmartKeyboard a good workout at VMworld and they both passed the test.  The only thing I noticed is it was a bit difficult to get links to open in a new window in WordPress interface, so I ended up cheating a little and writing out the HTML code.  Other than that, I really didn’t have any complaints, and I found myself trying to touch my MacBook screen when I started using it again!

Podcasts, Podcasts, Podcasts!

It turns out the blogger area was right next to the podcast booths!  I ended up a number of podcasts, which is always a ton of fun!  So far the following have been posted.

Books, Books, Books!

My first book SOLD OUT at the VMworld book store, and we ran out of copies at the Turbonomic hosted book signing!  If you weren’t able to grab a copy, don’t despair!  You can find ordering information at ITArchitectJourney.com, and I’ll be pinning discount codes on the @ITArchJourney twitter account.  Be sure to use #ITArchitectJourney when you tweet about the book!  For those of you who prefer electronic copies, the eBook should be ready very, very soon!

Upgrading the VCDX Way

Speaking of sold out, Rebecca Fitzhugh and I presented our session, Upgrading to vSphere 6.5 the VCDX Way to a packed house and had a great time.  Since I was presenting on Upgrading to vSphere 6.5, I decided I needed to practice what I preach and upgrade my own VCDX!  Brett Guarino and I decided to take a run at the VCAP Design 6.5 test and both passed to upgrade our VCDXs to 6.

All in all, I had a good time despite catching the vPlague on the way to #VMworld 2017.
